Medical Coding Specialist

This program is designed to prepare individuals to process and manage third party reimbursement in non-hospital settings.

The Medical Coding Specialist program prepares students for employment as entry-level coding specialists in health care facilities such as hospitals, clinics, physician practice groups, surgery center, long-term care facilities and home health care agencies.

Coding specialists may also find employment in insurance companies, governmental agencies, computer software companies and as consultants.

The medical coding specialist reviews medical documentation provided by physicians and other health care practitioners and translates this information into standardized numerical codes.

The coding specialist assigns and sequences diagnostic and procedural codes using universally recognized coding systems.  The codes are used to facilitate third-party reimbursement, facilitate statistical classification and research, and examine utilization patterns.
