Medical Insurance Billing Technician Program

This program is designed to prepare individuals to process and manage third party reimbursement in non-hospital settings. 

Physician practices, clinics, health maintenance organizations and other health care entities including private billing services are all employment options.


Upon completion of the program, graduates will be proficient in communication, equipment, and organizational skills.  Graduates will have knowledge of medical coding including: CPT, ICD-9, HCFA, medical billing, and completion of insurance forms.  Graduates will be able to input patient information for coding using medical software and be knowledgeable in starting a home business.

This program consists of six (6) professional training core courses and three (3) electives that must be taken for completion of the program.  The program requires 167 hours of training and can be completed in 3 months.  This program is primarily for individuals who do not seek other academic training coursework, but specific skill training.  All classes are instructor led with hands-on training. 

Program duration:
3 months, 162 clock hours (part-time)

Courses offered in the Medical Insurance Billing Technician Certificate include the following six (6) core topics and three (3) electives:

Core Courses
 1.  Medical Terminology (30 hours)
 2.  ICD-9 Coding (30 hours)
 3.  CPT Coding (30 hours)
 4.  Introduction to Medical Insurance (24 hours)
 5.  Insurance Reimbursement Calculations (15 hours)
 6.  Medical Office Computer Applications (15 hours)

Electives
 1.  Claims Filing (6 hours)
 2.  Appeals, Fair Hearings, and Collections (6 hours)
 3.  Advanced ICP/CPT (6 hours)

Students should have English reading/writing abilities at the 10th grade level. 

Typing or keyboarding skills are helpful but not required. 

All students will be given an assessment test upon enrollment to the program.
